Online Music Resources for Elementary and Middle School Students

Our after school program gives us an opportunity to work with students in a less structured environment. We are able to offer enrichment activities that support the what is learned at school through various activities. This semester, we offered two music units, violin and choir, for the elementary and middle school students. In Boost we use music to practice math and literacy skills. Students can practice counting notes and grouping them into measures. They learn to count various beats and rhythms. They also learn rhythm, rhyme, and vocabulary as they learn lyrics and set these lyrics to music. Additionally, the students have an opportunity to learn an instrument they may not be able to otherwise. Many researchers have looked at the connection between music education and cognitive skills. The economic impact of this pandemic is concerning to many. One way to be prepared to handle a variety of economic situations is by developing good financial literacy skills. Financial literacy is the ability to understand and effectively apply various financial skills, including personal financial management, budgeting, and investing. This life skill is important for 21st Century learners--students like all of you. It is never too early to start learning about managing money. Here are some resources that can help improve your financial literacy: PBS has a video series specifically aimed at students in second through tenth grades. These videos are less than two minutes long and cover topics like paying for college, credit score, long-term investing, buying a car, writing a check, and saving money. Celebrating 50 years of Earth Day with the National Parks

Happy Earth Day! Earth Day was started in 1970 to encourage people to be aware and find ways to protect the planet. This year will be the 50th year celebrating Earth Day. The National Park Services has posted virtual activities and videos to celebrate Earth Day. These week is also National Parks Week. While the parks are closed, there are still ways to explore.
